“GET SMART?”
- If you select from a list of articles, and search is built to serve up more of the same, is it easy to get to two sides of an argument? (Stop there or keep digging?)
- So if you get free information can you accept it without questioning it?
- And do we have time to check the source of our sources?
So who’s paying attention? And where do we get our own intelligence briefings? But meanwhile, if you ask around among your friends, where and how they keep informed and get their news, will they say, “It depends?”
So who is paying attention? Because we have options…
Depending on the topic we’ve got a favorite podcast for commutes; plus Facebook, and Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and Pinterest; then using search to find reported stories & articles; there’s that friend’s suggested indie film; maybe some network or cable TV, and possibly a radio show; what about that PBS series; plus subscriptions, books, and magazine articles… that we can view on our phones, Kindles, Fire 7’s, iPads, Kobos, Sony Readers…
so here are some Things we Can Do:
- get smart! switch off the TV, then:
- try picking up a book, or
- listen to a podcast; and for something new, try
- going to the local library branch,
- using a library reading room, then
- finding cool library resources; maybe even an
- opportunity to volunteer! or then a chance to
- learn a new language; or perhaps go to
- watch a documentary film; then learn more by
- visiting pbs.org; and when it’s time for a break try
- listening to an audio book; then meeting people at
- local author reading events
and possible “Get smart” Sources:
The Atlantic, The Intercept, The Guardian, Frontline, Mother Jones, Bill Moyers, Democracy Now!, Center for Investigative Reporting, truthout.org, NPR, Netflix, HBO, OWN, Sundance Film Fest, Truthdig, and more… Add yours! (And then share with friends and family).
9 Tips & Tricks Maybe You Didn’t Know!
By adding things to do and discovering more sources we have more ways of learning than ever. So it seems like from 2018 it’s a long way back to 2016…
Because we keep getting smarter.
