“Mikuriya was one of the very few doctors who publicly supported Prop 215. It was opposed by the entire medical establishment. This included the California Medical Association and former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop. After Prop 215 passed, except for AIDS and cancer specialists, very few California doctors- especially in the rural counties- were willing to approve cannabis use by their patients. Mikuriya became known as the doctor of last resort.
